Rapid HIV Testing Resources for Providers

About Rapid Testing: Health care providers and clients alike overwhelmingly agree that rapid HIV testing is the simplest and quickest way to test for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. With rapid testing, you know your HIV status in ONE visit not two weeks later. The rapid test is over 99% accurate, which is comparable to traditional testing methods.
So, the only hurdle that keeps you from knowing your HIV status is a single-drop of blood or a mouth swab. When you visit a rapid testing facility, a specially trained staff member will collect a drop of finger-stick blood or swab your mouth. While the test runs, a State certified HIV Prevention counselor will talk with you about HIV/AIDS. Usually by the end of your session your test results is also available.
If your test result is negative, no HIV antibodies were detected. However, if your last exposure was within three months also known as the window period, we suggest you come back for testing once the three months have expired.
If your test result is preliminary positive, HIV antibodies were detected in your blood. A second or confirmatory test will verify your status as HIV+ or HIV-. We will collect a new oral fluid specimen or blood depending on the facility. Regardless of your status, a State trained and certified counselor will help you identify your individual risk behaviors, understand your status and create a plan.
