Medication Safety
For client safety, Medicaid has the "PRODUR" computer program, which checks each new prescription for possible problems before a client receives the medication. The purpose is to prevent a new medication from causing a client more health problems.
When a client takes a prescription to a pharmacist, the pharmacist bills the prescription through the Medicaid computer program. The program checks the prescription against certain drug criteria, and against all other prescriptions that the client has filled through Medicaid. It does not matter where the client filled the prescription. Prescriptions filled at any pharmacy through Medicaid are kept in the computer files.
Here are the criteria the computer checks on prescriptions:
1.Is the dosage of the prescription below the minimum dose or above the maximum dose?
2.Is the prescription a duplicate of another drug given to the client?
3.Will the medication have an interaction with another drug given to the client?
4.Could the medication cause a health problem for client if he or she has certain medical conditions such as diabetes or is pregnant?
The computer program looks for problems which could be very serious, even life threatening. If the program finds a possible problem, the pharmacist sees a warning message. He will share the information with the client, and you can contact the prescriber if nessary.
