Newborn Hearing Screening

Hearing loss is the most frequently occurring birth defect. Three newborns in every one thousand are born with permanent hearing loss every year in Utah. It is important to identify these babies as soon as possible. Utah State law requires that all newborn infants have their hearing screened before they leave the birthing hospital. If your baby does not pass the hearing screening, you may be asked to schedule a follow-up screening soon after you take your baby home. It is very important that you keep this follow-up appointment. The results of this screening are available immediately and will be shared with your medical home (doctor).

Hearing can be tested at any age and the earlier is better. As you child grows, if you have concerns about hearing or speech and language development, talk to you medical home (doctor).
