Education for Teachers

Open Wide and Trek Inside
Developed by the National Institute of Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), Open Wide and
Trek Inside
is an inquiry-based instruction program designed to promote active learning.
The curriculum is designed to help students:
*   understand a set of basic scientific principles related to oral health,
*   experience the process of scientific inquiry and develop an enhanced
understanding of the nature and methods of science, and
*   recognize the role of science in society and the relationship between science
     and human health.
Open Wide and Trek Inside provides a Teacher's Guide with lesson plans and
implementation support as well as interactive material for students.

Head Start Lesson Plans
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Oral Health in partnership with the Head Start Oral Health Workgroup has developed Oral Health Awareness Lesson Plans. These lesson plans are designed for use in the Head Start classroom and contain activities, songs, and projects for children as well as corresponding take-home letters for parents. The lesson plans serve as an introduction to good oral health habits for young children. Through interactive classroom activities children discover that by keeping a healthy mouth they will have a healthy body.

Head Start Dental Health Curriculum
This Web Site, developed by the Administration for Children and Families of the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, assists teachers in conducting oral health lessons that will help Head Start Children develop an understanding of the importance of their teeth and of ways to keep a healthy mouth.  The Curriculum consists of lesson plans for ten modules including Visiting the Dentist, Keeping Teeth and Gums Clean, Wise Food Choices for a Healthy Mouth and Keeping Teeth Safe.
