Bicycle Rules of the Road
For Bicyclists
| Obey all traffic signs and signals. Bike riders must obey the same laws as motor vehicles. |
| Ride on the right side of the street in the same direction as traffic. If riding in a group, ride single file unless passing another bicyclist. |
Before entering a street from a driveway, parking lot or sidewalk, always stop to check traffic by looking left, right and then left again. |
Ride predictably in a straight line; do not swerve from side to side. |
| Do not ride back and forth from the sidewalk and roadway. |
Before moving left, always look over your shoulder to check traffic coming from behind and move over when it is safe to do so. |
Use hand signals to let other road users know what you are doing and where you are planning to go. |
If a car is slowing down, do not pass it on the right side; the driver may be turning right and may not see you. |
When riding a bike at night, your bike must have a headlight, a rear red reflector or taillight, and side reflectors. All must be visible from 500 feet. |
Yield to pedestrians when riding on a sidewalk. |
Always wear a helmet - it could save your life. |
For Motorists
| Recognize situations along the right side of the road that are hazardous for bicyclists such as broken glass, debris, storm grates, parked cars, garbage cans, and construction barricades. Slow down and give bicyclists the room they need to maneuver around these trouble spots. |
When passing a bicycle move over and give the bicycle at least 3-feet of space. If traveling on a high-speed road or up a hill give the bicyclist even more than 3-feet of space. |
If the lane is too narrow to safely pass a bicyclist, move over to the next lane to pass the bicyclist. |
When making a left turn, don’t underestimate the speed and distance of an oncoming bicyclist. If turning in front of the bicyclist would cause him to use the brakes, yield and wait to make the turn. |
Do not park or drive in bike lanes. |
Before making a right turn, check your blind spot to make sure you won’t be turning into or cutting off a bicyclist traveling on the right side of the road. |
Before exiting or entering a driveway or parking lot, look for bicyclists on the sidewalk. |
